You never know when you will be involved in a car accident. Chances are either you or someone you know will be involved in one this year. Here are some helpful hints in the event you are involved in a fender bender:

Turn off your vehicle’s engine…

…and wait for assistance. If you feel threatened or are stopped in the middle of the road, pull the vehicle to the shoulder or a well-lit parking area. Remain calm!

Check for injuries.

Check yourself and others in your vehicle and seek assistance immediately if necessary. Call the police or 911.

Be courteous and tactful to all parties.

Make sure you are thinking clearly before you make any statements to the police or insurance personnel. Don’t accept fault, even if you believe the car accident may be your fault. Ask for the time you need to gather your thoughts before answering questions.

Gather information.

Exchange names, addresses, license numbers and insurance information with all parties involved in the car accident. Gather witness information as well.
